About the project

Chapel Hill, home to the nation’s oldest public university, often has been nicknamed, “the Southern Part of Heaven.” Taking its title from the mascot of Chapel Hill’s former all-Black Lincoln High School, the “Mighty Tigers,” Mighty tells a different story. It amplifies the ordinary and extraordinary voices of the historically African American community known as Northside, whose forebears built the university, who grew up in close-knit and thriving Black neighborhoods in a segregated town, who participated in the local civil rights movement and today are still fighting for visibility, justice, and the right to stay in homes they’ve lived in for generations. Featuring photos by Jim Wallace, Mighty is a tribute to all African American communities in towns and cities throughout the South and the U.S. whose history has likewise been overlooked. And Mighty is a call for a reckoning with the country’s racist past by actively listening and recording life stories that matter.
